This lovely couple decided to incorporate a special ritual known as "jumping the broom" into their wedding ceremony; this traditional African American wedding rite is an important part of my heritage. As a Black wedding officiant, I get to officiate this beautiful tradition for many of the couples I marry. This ritual has been a symbol of unity and faithfulness within our culture for centuries, and is still celebrated today as a reminder of our history; it hails from the days when slavery was still legal in America. As slaves were forbidden to marry, this practice became an alternative way for African American couples to signify their commitment and devotion to one another. It is believed that by jumping over the broom together, families were created, new beginnings formed and legacies began. I am so proud to be able to bring this meaningful tradition into modern weddings when I preside over ceremonies.
We planned everything down to the last detail; from hiring a live band and a DJ to provide entertainment during cocktail hour and throughout dinner, there was never a dull moment! As night fell on their magical day, guests were treated to an evening filled with plenty of dancing under twinkling lights strung across the ceiling. Our couple also decided to put a spin on their big day by ditching the traditional wedding cake and opting for a funnel cake truck instead.
It was truly a day neither Bride nor Groom will ever forget!
